Our commitment is to create an environment where everyone is valued. Our One Tompkins initiative brings together minds and ideas from across the company to implement educational sessions and cultural celebrations. You’ll see these efforts reflected in our onboarding and mentoring processes. You’ll see them reflected in resources to support us internally and support our communities externally, like our Employee Resource Groups and Acorn Community Alliance.

Who is Tompkins?

We are happy to showcase our new series "I am Tompkins." We are introducing you to some of our amazing team members and leaders across Tompkins, showcasing their hobbies outside of banking and giving you some insight into the faces behind your local bank!

i am tompkins bill l

Bill L., VP, Change Management and Project Portfolio Manager.

In his spare time Bill is a photographer, often combining that with kayaking. This combination hobby gives an insight to how Bill has developed his leadership style at Tompkins.

"I like to do photography and kayaking together and it can be a challenge. You want to be stable when doing photography, but obviously sitting in a kayak is not always the best approach for this.

A key aspect of leadership is dealing with change. There are certain characteristics in my hobby that I have developed that also lend themselves to leadership through change:

Curiosity (I like to see what’s around the next corner), patience, resiliency and the willingness to try new things."

I am a Photographer.
I am a Leader.

i am tompkins jennifer green

Jennifer G., SVP, Managing Director for Tompkins Financial Advisors.

Outside of Tompkins, Jenn has been a long-time motocross rider. Drawing on that experience to make quick decisions in all facets of her life.

"My initial draw to motocross was the freedom and pure adrenaline rush it provided at an early age. Later in life came a genuine appreciation for the enriching life skills it’s taught me.

Fundamentally, motocross requires discipline and physical fitness. More importantly, it demands mental toughness, technical skills, and the ability to assess risk (real-time in competition). Being able to navigate the proverbial “terrain”, whether it be on the racetrack or working in the business, you must be adept at making critical decisions in challenging environments, with sometimes limited information at your disposal.

The last ten years, my family and I have transitioned more to trail riding for all to enjoy. It’s given me great pleasure to witness the rewards the sport has bestowed on both my daughters. From increased confidence and shear grit, to enhanced problemed solving and self-sufficiency, they’re all experiences gained!"

I am a Motocross Rider.
I am a Leader.

I am Tompkins Nick Hereth

Nicholas H., VP, Small Business Lending Manager.

Outside of Tompkins, Nick is a golfer, learning from each shot he takes, just like he learns from each decision he makes at Tompkins.

"My favorite hobby is golf. Golf and leadership may seem like complete opposites since golf is an individual sport, while leadership is a team effort. I do think that many of the characteristics of great leaders are also shared with great golfers, or sub-par golfers like myself. They are integrity, honesty, patience, focus, strategic thinking, emotional control, a drive for continuous improvement and most-importantly, self-awareness. As I continue to develop and tinker my golf game, I learn something new after each shot, putt & round. This is the case with leadership as well. I continue to learn and develop my skills after each decision is made and remain focused on improving myself and the people around me."
